THE STORY OF A DISOBEDIENT SON (Episode one) – Written by Esther Ezekiel.

Episode one

“Where is this ship going to?” He asked hurriedly.
“Tarshish!” The Captain said.
“Good that’s where I am going. How much is the fare?”
The captain mentioned it and he paid quickly.

He climbed on the ship and went below deck. After putting his luggage down, he did a little victory dance and laughed. “Yes! I excaped!” He screamed with a shrill voice and rubbed his palms together in excitement.

He lay down happily thinking about his escape; He was going about his business when God told him to go to Nineveh to preach to them to repent. He complained but God will hear none if it, so he rushed down here, Joppa and now he was on a ship going to Tarshish.
Feeling elated about his smooth escape he soon feel asleep.

If only He knew that He had not excaped at all.

“Captain! What is happening! I have never seen this kind of storm before…” The helmsman trying to steer the ship against the tides said to the captain. The helmsman soon gave up. He was already tired. In all his tears of steering a ship he had never seen a storm like this before. The storm threatened to break the ship. “What could be happening?” He asked himself.

“Lighten the ship.” The captain shouted to the passangers using his hands to cup his mouth.

Everyone got into action. Goods worth much skekels of silver and gold were thrown over board The ship tosses and turned despite the fact that all goods on it had been thrown into the sea. Everyone’s eyes were wide with fear. “Is this how I am going to die?” was the question in their heart. Many sorrowed that they would not see their beloved children, wife, mother, father, uncle, aunt’s and friends again.

Everyone decided to cry to their own God. Some cried to Baal “Oh Baal save me”. Some cried to Astaroth. Some cried to Asherim, some to Asherah and many other gods. Still the ship continued to be tossed to and fro by the great storm. In the midst of this pandemonium and chaos. One man was asleep below the deck, oblivious to what was going on.😌

The captain walking around, went below deck and He was surprised to see a man sleeping at that moment. He tapped him violently.
“Brother, how can you sleep at this moment? Get up and call on your god! Maybe, He will take notice of us so that we cannot perish.” He said to the confused man who was still feeling dizzy because he just woke up. After the captain had walked away, the man got up walked to the deck. He became alarmed at the raging storm. “This is serious!” He thought. “I thought I have escaped.”

One sailor said to his mates… “This is beyond our control, I suspect someone brought this badluck on us. Let us cast lost to find out…” “Yes. Let’s do that.” His mates agreed and then the lot was cast. The lot fell on the man who was sleeping previously.

So everyone gathered around him and asked…
“What us your name?”
“Jonah.” He replied.
“Tell us, who is responsible for making all these trouble for us?” “What kind of work do you do?” “Where do you come from?” “What is your country?” “From what people are you?” These questions were thrown at him the same time.

“I am a Hebrew…”
“A Hebrew?” A man asked with fear. He had heard stories about the God of the Israelites. He could only wonder.
“Yes. I am an Hebrew and I worship the Lord, the God of heaven, who made the sea and the dry land.”

“Hmmm.” The men sighed, deeply terrified. If the God of Israel was behind this then doom awaited them. They thought. They had heard how the Egyptians perished in the red sea when they pursued the people of Israel to make them slaves again after releasing them. They have heard of how the walls of Jericho fell down flat after the people of Israel marched around it for seven days. They had heard of the story of David and Goliath and many others. They were really terrified 😳

“What have you done?” They asked Jonah when he told them he was running away from God. Even they who served less powerful deities obeyed their gods instantly, how could one now run away from a big God as the God of Israel whom nations were terrified off.

The sea got rougher and rougher. “Let’s find a solution to this, or else we persh! They said among themselves.” So they turned to Jonah and asked what they could do to calm the sea.

Jonah thought for a moment. If he remained in the ship, the ship was going to capsize and everyone would died and he could not ask them to take him to land because the storm was beating wildly against the ship. The only option was to be thrown into the sea.

“I know it is my fault that this storm has come upon you, please pick me up and thrown me into the sea.” He said with a quavering voice.

The men could not do that. How could they throw a native of Israel into the sea. A son of the God that they were afraid of. It is not possible! They said among themselves.

They asked the helmsman steering the sheep to drive the vessel towards land so that they can drop Jonah there but all their attempts to do so failed.

Finally, they gave up and went on their knees. Their clothes sticking to their bodies because they were wet.
“Please Lord, Don’t not let us die for taking this man’s life. Do not hold us accountable for killing an innocent man, for you Lord, have done as you pleased.” The prayed. With fear, they took Jonah and threw him overboard, and the raging sea grew calm.

The men turned to one another in surprise. They became more terrified of the God of Israel. The fear of the Lord fell upon them and they offered sacrifice to the Lord singing praises to Him. “Indeed, the God of Israel is above all gods.” They praised. The made vows to him and the journey to Tarshish went smoothly. Everyone had a story to tell when they got back home. The God of Israel was no longer the distant God they heard stories about, they had seen His power and they believed in Him.

Meanwhile, Jonah floated in the sea. He wondered why He was not drowning. Suddenly He saw himself going in a rush with many fishes into a large opening. “What is happening?” He wondered…

To be continued…

When things begin to go wrong, who do you run to? When the storm got worse, everyone called on his god? The one or thing you run to shows whom or what you put your faith in.

When things begin to go wrong, that’s not the time to fight witches and wizards and all the powers of darkness. It’s the time to go to God to hear from Him the cause of what is happening to you. Do you know why? Witches, Wizards, demons and even the devil have no right to operate in your life as a Christian except the Lord gives them the permission. Job’s story says it all.

When you have the wrong people in the ship of your life, you would experience violent storms and your life would want to sink. You would not have stillness and peace until you throw them overboard. Some Christians are friends with people who are bitter against God. When God’s punishment comes upon their friends, they share in it. Pray about all your relationships even business relationships. You can lose all you have work for because of a single relationship.
