32 Then Jesus summoned his disciples and said to them, “I have compassion on the throng, since they have been with me three days and have eaten nothing; and I will not send them away fasting, lest they faint on the way.”

33 And his disciples ask him, “Where did we get so much bread in the wilderness to feed such a large crowd?”

34 And Jesus asks them, “How many loaves do you have?” They said, “Seven, plus a couple small fishes.”

35 And he told the crowd to take a seat on the ground.

36 And he gave thanks, and broke the loaves and fishes, and distributed them to his disciples, and the disciples to the multitude.

37 And they all ate and were satisfied, and they filled seven baskets with the broken meat that had been left.

38 And among those who ate were 4,000 males, as well as women and children.

39 And he sent the throng, boarded a ship, and arrived on the Magdala coastlines.

“And Jesus said unto them, How many loaves have ye?” KEY VERSE: “And Jesus said unto them, How many loaves have ye?” “Seven, plus a couple small fishes,” they said (MATTHEW 15:34).

We frequently focus on our personal shortcomings, such as the qualities and abilities we lack. We overlook our small offerings and endowments, concluding that nothing worthwhile can come from us. As a result, we are prone to giving up or becoming disheartened. We forget that God works via His own sovereign strength, not with the magnitude of our spiritual or materialistic goods.

With His disciples, Jesus had gone on a retreat. He got concerned about the people’s well-being after three days without meals. “Lest they faint in the way,” he would not send them home on an empty stomach. He turned to His disciples and asked about their food supply.

They informed Him right away that there wasn’t much, only seven loaves and a few small fishes. How is it possible that this will feed tens of thousands of people? But Jesus wasn’t seeking for a vast supply of food; He had the ability to multiply a few loaves into a large supply for a great number of people.

Surprisingly, everyone in the gathering ate to their hearts’ content, leaving seven extra baskets of leftovers. There were four thousand males in attendance, in addition to women and children.

God does not require our assistance to accomplish anything for us. He just asks that we trust in His ability to provide us with everything we need to live a flourishing life. Our faith is the key to unlocking God’s miraculous wonders. It gives us the confidence to think that God is capable of anything. He “is able to do surpassing abundantly above all that we ask or think” in any situation.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: In the hands of the Almighty, small things can grow into big things.
